Becker was sparing with detail, capturing the ‘essence’ of a scene as he used freedom of line and expression to represent a working figure or animal in the Suffolk landscape. He would find the world of farming much changed from the hard manual labour he featured in his work. Diversification has led to farm shops/cafes being familiar sights in today’s countryside, alongside mechanised farm machinery.
I like to evoke atmosphere and light in my work using an impressionistic approach to convey a Suffolk scene. Dabs of light and economy of brush are an exciting way to interpret a subject.
