Drawing working men and animals was a large part of Becker’s portfolio. I made my annual pilgrimage in February to local lamb pens to sketch. In the sheep sheds there is still a timeless routine of birthing and feeding that would be recognisable by Becker. Sketching in pastel and charcoal, I tried to catch the movement of sheep & lambs and the tasks of farmer and shepherd. East Anglia is still rural but methods of farming have changed.
In the spirit of Becker, I’ll be out drawing how the land is worked today.
